Don't forget to scroll down through the website for lots of great links & ideas that were posted from March to June 2020. It really is hard to settle back into this lockdown with the short days & wet weather. BUT I really feel Seesaw is helping to stay connected with each other.
Home School Hub & After School Hub are excellent TV programmes on RTE.
CJ Fallon have made their resources available for free for parents while we are at home. Click on the link. Then Student Resources. Click on what topic you'd like & enter your email. You can watch maths tutorials without your email. Very informative tutorials. Click on your class level. Then maths. Then Busy at maths . The animations are the tutorials. The audio for Léigh sa Bhaile are also very good to listen to.

As per the governments directive, school buildings are to remain closed & learning is to move online. Your teacher will be in touch via email & seesaw. Any extra information I feel may be of benefit to you will be posted here.
Folens have a huge selection of resources, once you register. It is free for now while schools closed. The Abair Liom programme is great for Gaeilge & we don't use it at school so would be good revision of the themes. Also their Explorers programme is great for SESE & again we don't use it in school.
www.folensonline.ie/
For those little people who have ran out of books at home the oxford owl website is great. Just sign up for free. Borrowbox is great also if you are a member of the library. Scroll down to the end of its website for instructions.

Monday 21st: Covid was not going to ruin our Santa visit! So he was driven to the door by Steph & made himself comfy in his grotto. He then zoomed called each class & spoke to each child. It was very special. Thanks Santa, see you next year,.
Friday 18th: A very merry Christmas from us all here. A few more days to go & we are all off to enjoy a well deserved rest. The children have been amazing since September, adapting so easily to the covid guidelines. Thank you to our parents & the wider school community for complying with the guidelines also. I will post some final pictures on Tuesday. The seesaw accounts are super busy so please keep an eye on them.
We are full of Christmas spirit in 5th & 6th class! We have been busy practicing our Christmas Carols on the chimes ( which we will upload to Seesaw for you to see!) We have also been doing lots of lovely artwork! Lucky 6th class also got a special treat this week when we got to go down to Kabo cafe for a yummy hot chocolate! Happy Christmas from us all in 5th & 6th class!

Thursday 17th: Every class in the school had their individual Christmas photo taken and a class photo. They came out fabulous & have been posted on their seesaw accounts.
We were determined that Covid would not put a stop to our usual Christmas celebrations. So each class have been putting together little performances. They will be posted on their seesaw accounts. Some have learned poems, played tin whistle tunes outside, learned to play a Christmas carol using the chimes. The infants put on a fantastic nativity play but without an audience. Thanks to Dylan & Clara, our narrators too. Each class watched the nativity on their boards, which was just as special.
We are conscious that the parents can not come into the school these days so I went around snapping our fabulous Christmas art on display.
Wednesday 16th Dec: 1st & 2nd were learning about Italy for November. They researched projects, made paper pizzas, clay volcanoes, experimented with chemical explosions at home & finished with an Italian birthday celebration for birthdays missed due to covid. It was such a great month.

Tuesday 10th: We have been approached by RTE to take part in the After School Hub programme... They have sent us a Christmas Show script, that the families will perform at home due to social distancing. We created promo videos at school, taped the children talking about the christmas show & what the characters might be wearing, who they will send their videos to & what they might ask the Minister for Education!! We have such a laugh, great fun & a welcome distraction....
Nov 9-13th: Science week. Great fun being had this week. 1st & 2nd have observed a lava lamp & volcano in action! And have to make their own again at home & send by seesaw. Junior & Senior infants have ben mixing colours. 1st to 6th logged into a online session today about fossils, organised by Fiona. Paul Leamy informed us about two upcoming webinars from Teagasc about farming, which we have registered for. Strange times when science week is mostly online due to the social distancing element....... Feel free to send any experiments to the class teachers via seesaw.
Friday 23rd: Great excitement today. We all needed it after a hard first half term. Great laughter & fun. The children & teachers took part in our traditional fashion parades, waving instead of high fives this yr, followed by the disco outside. Thriller routine & Time Warp dancing were brilliant. No class pics either from 3rd up due to Covid. But the kids take no notice though which is great.
Have a wonderful, restful week off.

I am always amazed at what the children know about sea creatures/rocks pool etc. Scoil na Mara focuses on a lady teaching the children about limpets, crabs etc. Very interesting. I felt I learned something!! So far I think she has only 3 episodes aired but will keep a look out for ye. If ye have came across something interesting that you think the other children would enjoy please let us know so we can pass it on. These are in order from episode 1 to 3. Enjoy.

Sudoku is also a great way to pass a rainy day & super for the maths brain.... We bought a small book in Tesco but plenty online too.

9th: Some summer art ideas today. I know ye won't have a lot of art materials so I've added added a picture using flowers. Nature art is a fantastic as the countryside is blooming at the moment. Stone art is also a great idea if you are heading to the beach.
8th: Morning all. As most of you know I live in Westport now but you may not know that I went to secondary school in Tourmakeady. Last week, my local community lost a 5 year old boy to drowning on the lake and all over Ireland the Coastguard have helped in other water rescues. So today my focus is on water safety & farm safety. As we are not in school Irish Water Safety have amended their resources for Water Safety to be taught at home. Here is the link. And below is a press release from Irish Water Safety & the Coastguard. www.teachpaws.ie/
AgriKids is a website we would use for teaching Farm safety. They have very kindly offered a webinar on Wednesday. They have split it into two sessions. First link for 4-7yr olds. Second link for registering for 8-12 year olds.

22nd: Another webinar next Tuesday for 6th class parents & a booklet for parents to help with the transition from 6th to secondary school.
We have been very lucky with the weather so far but today is a day for Indoor Activities. Let's hope it clears fast! The Lego is coming out here once the school work is done. It is a great learning tool. Feel free to show us on Seesaw what ye get up to. Have a great weekend.
A blast from the past!
20th: Here is a pdf with ideas for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths). Kids love it as they get to create an object using household items.
19th: As it's nearing the end of primary school for 6th class, you may be anxious about them starting secondary school. Here are two webinars to help with the transition. The first one has a waiting list but they may put on a second one seeing there is so much interest so pop your name on the waiting list.

We used our butterflies to inspire some art today. Maybe ye'd like to try some. Here are just some suggestions. We made symmetrical butterflies with paint today. We drew our shape first but didn't cut it out until the paint was dry. The chalk butterflies picture is one for a dryer day! All ideas from google!
Bye bye butterflies. They were very reluctant to fly away so we helped them onto our trees. Sad it's over as it was a lovely way to spend 4 weeks of the lockdown.... Hope you all enjoyed watching from afar.
18th: We had a very busy weekend watching the butterflies. The first butterfly emerged on Saturday morning. So we watched closely after that & caught one emerging on video. It's on my seesaw classroom. It really is amazing. We have painted ladies so they should live for about 12 months. It is very obvious why they are insects because we can see their 6 legs, 3 parts to their body & a set of antennae very clearly. Until we let them go today, we have to feed them sugar water as they usually eat nectar from flowers.
15th: If we were in school, this week would have been very busy getting ready for Sunday. This Sunday my 2nd class should be receiving their First Holy Communion. It is postponed for now, but we wanted to let them know we are thinking of them. This is a very special milestone & we all look forward to celebrating it with them soon.
14th: Over the past few years 5th & 6th class have been enjoying The Connemara Young Scientist Programme, engaging in scientific workshops delivered by Bowen Ormsby, Graham Sales & Declan Holmes.
Disclosure!: Declan is married to a friend of mine & is from Mayo.

5th May. Our little caterpillars were busy over the weekend. Picture 1 was on day 10. They spent the day like that, eating! Day 11 two went into a hanging J shape from the lid of the cup. Day 12 saw two in a chrysalis, which happened over night so we missed it. We will be watching the 3rd caterpillar closely today!
May 1st 2020: I can't believe we have entered another month of distance teaching & home learning. Hopefully after today we will be a little wiser about the 'Road Map' back to each other. We are very lucky that the publishers have made their books & resources available online for you at home. It has also made work for us easier as we cannot access to school for our books.

30th: I'm sure you have heard the kids talking about Gonoodle. It's a website for dancing, mindfulness, running & plenty more aspects of the PE curriculum. My room love it. You have to sign up but it's free & all can participate, even the parents!

The caterpillars are growing nicely too. Lots of silk webbing & exoskeletons & eaten food in the cup now, all signs of happy caterpillars. Hopefully by early next week they will climb to the top of the cup, hang in a J shape, shed their exoskeleton one last time & harden into chrysalises.

29th: It is very hard to teach Gaeilge by distance so by using the duolingo you are doing a great job. Below are some suggestions that you might find helpful too.
A great way to get Gaeilge into your home is by watching TG4. Here is the link to the list of programmes for children.
https://www.tg4.ie/en/player/categories/childrens-tv-shows/
We have watched a few to see which ones we like:
Olivia (the pig!),
Am Foghlama le Timmy (similar to Shaun the Sheep & very short but informative),
Cula4 ar scoil (new programme aimed at Gaelscoileanna),
Is Mise ( children learning a new skill),
Woozle & Pip (dog cartoon)
Scéal an Lae (story read aloud on YouTube)
By watching even one programme a day can really improve the childrens understanding.
Happy watching! If you find one ye like can you let us know & we will pass it onto other parents.
Also Folens online have a programme called Abair Liom. It's very good if you wanted to have a look.
Log into folensonline. Search Abair Liom for your class. Click on the resources for that book. Then click theme & choose what to listen to. Click on comhra 1st then the ceisteanna. Very child friendly.
And finally Seadáín Sí. We listen to these stories in school. They have games also but start at the Naíonáin Bheaga & move through the games. To see the books, click on aiseanna & again start with Naíonáin Bheaga. They read it for the children! And Twinkl have some powerpoints & printables. Oral questions from Twinkl below.

I want to introduce you to the 5 new members of the Letterfrack family. Every second year I teach about the life cycle of the butterfly. This year the caterpillars have to live with me but I didn't want to children missing out. So I will post pictures of the transformation every couple of days.
These pictures are from Day 1, 3 & 5. You can see how fast they grow. The lovely brown substance at the bottom is their food. You can see how they have shed their exoskeletons as they grow. Fascinating. So sad the kids miss out on watching it this year.

24th: We just wanted to say we are thinking of all the birthdays that haven't had a proper celebration this month, children, parents & two teachers. So............
It's perfect weather for scavenger hunts! Plenty online for inspiration but here are a few to get you started & a great way to cover science/maths/English. You can add 3D shapes to the shape hunt, inside or outside. Or make/write your own!
The teachers have set up Seesaw, a communication platform, in response to the survey sent on Monday. The link was sent by email so please join in so the children can communicate with each other.

23rd: I was sent this booklet by a past parent. She thought ye might like it. We are part of world history & may like to record it. If you don't have a printer, like myself, they could write/draw out a few pages. Mine really enjoyed the Interview Your Parent page!

You know how nature is very important to us in Letterfrack so I went in search of some ideas for you. The pictures are just some of the many ideas that the internet showed me. I'm sure you could make some of your own. If you do please send your teacher a picture. We'd love to see what ye are creating. Den building is always a hit around the school yard so if you've made one at home please show us. Rock painting is also something nice for the garden, maybe your own ladybird.
22nd: Today should be a very important day for Miss Jennifer & her Confirmation children. They should be at home getting themselves ready to meet the Bishop. And what a gloriously sunny day they would have had too. But it's not to be for now. We wanted to make sure the children knew we were thinking of them so we came together (virtually!) to send them this picture. I hope they are marking this day somehow with their family. It is not an easy time for any of us but I feel the children are missing out on so many occasions that are special to them. Let's all stay home & stay safe so we can get back together soon.
21st: By the end of today, you will all have the books from school. So I thought you might like a sample timetable from the Dept. They also sent a blank one for you to do up your own. Remember, every house is different so the timetable is just a suggestion. I am also attaching relaxation tips from the Dept.
April 20th: Welcome to our last term of this school year. Not the usual last term but we will all do our best to deal with this unprecedented situation. I hope you enjoyed a wonderfully sunny Easter.
I was asked to pass on the book below from one of our parents. It is a story for children about Covid-19.

If you haven't heard of the School Hub, it is worth watching. It is running over the Easter too. And TG4 will have their own show starting Monday 20th.
1. Cúla4 ar Scoil
Starts Monday 20 April at 10:00 a.m. on TG4.
2. RTÉ and Macalla Teo, with support from Mary Immaculate College, have collaborated to introduce a cross-platform teaching initiative for primary school kids across the country. On RTÉ2, RTÉ Player, and rte.ie/learn, children will be able to watch, download and engage with curriculum-based content, project work, and fun activities that will keep them entertained and learning. From Monday 30 March, each morning from 11am to 12 noon on RTÉ Home School Hub on RTÉ2, each of our bilingual teachers will present three short class segments aimed at 1st and 2nd class, 3rd and 4th class and 5th and 6th class. Our TV programme will keep the kids watching and learning for the hour and then redirect them to fun content and project work that will be housed on rte.ie/learn and RTÉ Player.
3. Heritage in Schools sent us an email to pass on. We will forward it on after the holidays but for now have a look at their site. They have tutorials that might interest the kids. Gordon D'Arcy (the artist!) has a tutorial & the kids are familiar with him from visiting our school.

April 1st: Happy April Fools Day! Growing seeds is a great idea this time of year. It is very easy & results are quick. If you are in Lidl getting your shopping (being mindful of social distancing), you could pick up a pack of cress seeds, if it's something that might interest you. They grow in soil, but also grow on cotton wool very well too. Chat about what seeds/plants need to grow.
31st: Circuit/station teaching is a fantastic way to cover a few skills in one lesson. We teach through stations in English & Maths regularly and for PE at times. The kids could set up their own PE stations using the picture below, adding in their favourite burbees too!!!

20th: Good morning all. Well done on surviving (kindof!) the 1st week of our unprecedented school closures. The Dept of Education asked us to implement measures to facilitate distance learning, which is very difficult for primary schools. So step 1 is to keep this website updated, both on this page & the Tips for parents page and step 2 was to step up classroom email addresses so we can contact each other when needed. But please remember you have always been your child's primary educator so it is up to you how you engage in our distance learning. The information will be given by us for when/if you want it.
Finally, Mother's Day is not cancelled so enjoy the special day on Sunday!

CJ Fallon student resources link is fantastic & opens up all resources once you sign in. Readers, comprehension, all subjects. Have a look. Topmarks is a wonderful website. The tables link is great but can also be done without the laptop & asked orally by yourself or older siblings.. And Hit the button on Topmarks is great & the kids love it. It is suitable from Senior Infants up.
Although I am posting a lot of websites some these can be done without screens, once you get the idea. But we are very lucky to have access to these publishers resources as all you need is interest & possibly a copy & pencil! Enjoy
