About us
Letterfrack National School is situated on a beautiful landscaped site in the Quaker village of Letterfrack at the foot of the Diamond Hill and beside the rugged Connemara National Park. It is a Roman Catholic school and has many children from other denominations in the school. It is a DEIS school under the rural DEIS band.
Letterfrack School was opened on November 1st 1866, in a small house in Dawros. Students were drawn from a wide social range. The school moved to its present building in 1965. The building had two classrooms and two teachers to begin with and a third teacher was appointed in the early seventies. There was no classroom available for this teacher so the local court house in the village was used as a classroom until a prefab was granted by the Department of Education. In the late eighties the school and local community fought for a new classroom to be built as the prefab was in very bad condition and a health risk to the children. A classroom was built at the back of the school in the early nineties but was not connected to the main school and had a separate entrance. This classroom was used until another classroom was added to the front of the main school in the mid nineties and the building at the back was used as a creche for the local community until 2008. In the summer of 2010 major work was carried out to connect the building at the back to the main school and it is now used as a general purpose room.
